The Eagles were one of the bands that performed at the first “California Jam Festival” back in 1974. People were in the process of breaking down the fence when my friends and I arrived on the scene, so we all got in for free. There were a lot of bands… Deep Purple, ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Black Sabbath, Rare Earth, Black Oak Arkansas... It was like a mini Woodstock!
We got there late and were way in the back, so we couldn’t see much. The music was great though! However, I must admit that I don’t really remember the Eagles being there. I do remember it was a very hot day. Some hippies were handing out water balloons to help everyone cool off.
According to Wikipedia…
“…there were more than 300,000 fans and it was billed as “the Woodstock of the West Coast”, Portions of the show were telecast on ABC television in the United States, exposing the Eagles to a wider audience. Felder missed the show when he was called away to attend the birth of his son; Jackson Browne filled in for him on piano and acoustic guitar.”
Even though I don’t remember seeing the Eagles at the California Jam, I do remember seeing them on New Years Eve in 1974 under more controlled circumstances. It was a much smaller concert in Los Angeles and they were the only band. They played Tequilla Sunrise and Desperado, which were two of my favorite Eagles songs at that time.
The band was formed in 1971 and quickly rose to fame, selling more than 150 million records. One of their most well known songs is Hotel California. Rolling Stone magazine listed the Hotel California album #37 among “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time“.
It was sad when I heard the news that Glenn Frey had passed away at the early age of 67 due to health problems. He was a founding member of the Eagles and contributed vocals, guitar, piano and keyboard to the band’s music. He will be missed.
Words from a Joni Mitchell song come to mind…
“Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.”
I think that says it all.
